At the time of his death, iconic music superstar Prince did not have star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
With a massively successful career, Prince has sold over 100 million records, churned out dozens of albums, won an Oscar for Best Original Song Score for Purple Rain, was nominated for over 30 Grammys and won seven, and in 2004 was inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame – among countless other awards and achievements. However, upon searching we learned the music legend does not have a Walk of Fame star.
According to the Walk of Fame’s official website, individuals must be nominated for a star.
IMPORTANT: The Hollywood Walk of Fame considers all nomination applications once a year in June. Please read carefully the guidelines and process to submit an application. The Hollywood Walk of Fame does not accept, encourage or support any other effort – letter writing, online petitions or signature gathering – to nominate a star.
The Walk of Fame categories include Motion Pictures, Television, Radio, Recording and Live Performance/Theatre. The committee will select approximately 12-15 names for insertion into the Walk. When nominating an individual or group, the sponsor must submit a photo, a bio and the nominee’s qualifications as well as a list of contributions to the community and civic-oriented participation. A letter of agreement from the nominee or his/her management must be included with the application.
Walk of Fame spokeswoman Ana Martinez tweeted that Prince was never nominated and paperwork was never sent in.
The Walk of Fame nomination form states that posthumous nominations can be made after the fifth anniversary of the nominees death. This would make Prince eligible for nomination after April 21, 2021.
In life, Prince was a very private person and a humbly celebrity, so it is not totally shocking that he never received a Walk of Fame star. The rules state that the nominee must be present at the ceremony, sign a consent form to agree to the nomination, and sign a release for footage to be used promotionally. Prince has received numerous awards in his time, so this could fall somewhere in that type of category, but seeing how involved he would have had to be in his own nomination process, it’s not surprising to learn he never did it.
A respected musical icon who left a powerful legacy of innovation, creativity, ownership, and humanitarianism – and impacted the lives of millions – it’s very likely we will be celebrating Prince’s Walk of Fame start posthumously in 2021. I sure hope so.
